1964, Public Library of Alcamo, Sicily. Franca reads in an ancient book the account of a trial that took place in that very city in 1243. The wealthy merchant Goffredo is accused of raping Benvenuta, a girl of humble origins. Thanks to a law enacted by Frederick II—whose revolutionary impact would remain unmatched for eight centuries, even to this day—the court may find him guilty and deliver justice. Young Franca, a character inspired by Franca Viola, passionately identifies with Benvenuta’s story.
