The Cinema That Endures: The Picentia Short Film Festival Announces the Dates for Its 10th Edition and Its Partnership with Magna Graecia

Festival director Luca Capacchione unveils the concept for the 10th edition (September 21–27 in Battipaglia) and takes on the role of artistic director for the short films at the Magna Graecia Film Festival. The Picentia Short Film Festival celebrates its tenth anniversary and officially announces the dates and artistic vision for its highly anticipated “10th Edition.” From September 21 to 27, 2026, the international festival organized and produced by ACT Production will once again bring the Campania town of Battipaglia to life, centering its exploration on the concept “Echoes.” The festival’s founder and artistic director, Luca Capacchione, unveils the guiding theme: a landmark edition designed to explore the reverberations of existence, memory, and the constant perceptual and temporal shifts between past and present. The “echo” is not meant as nostalgia for what has already been experienced, but as a living vibration that resonates in the present, capable of guiding the new languages of short film toward an understanding of the contemporary world. “Reaching our tenth edition means looking back on the path we’ve traveled without ever ceasing to question the future of cinema,” declares founder and artistic director Luca Capacchione. “With ‘Echoes,’ we want to invite filmmakers to explore those traces, those memories, and those invisible transitions that continue to reverberate from the past into the present. Short-form cinema has the extraordinary ability to capture these immediate vibrations and transform them into universal visions.” As part of this journey of maturation and growth, the festival is introducing a historic structural innovation this year: the debut of “Over Time,” a new competitive section entirely dedicated to feature films, which will complement the official selection of short films to offer an even broader platform for expression and distribution to international directors and productions. The announcement of the tenth edition comes at a time of intense activity and institutional prestige for the Campania-based festival. As a testament to the artistic credibility it has earned in the field, the festival is renewing its collaboration with the Magna Graecia Film Festival in Calabria, where the Picentia team will once again oversee the short film section. The section will be led by Luca Capacchione (Artistic Director) and Jacopo Curcio (Technical Director). At the heart of this collaboration will be the presentation of the finalists in the “First Lights” section, a project conceived as a true incubator for the filmmakers of tomorrow, focused on supporting debuts and young talents from the Italian and international scenes. Picentia Short Film Festival 2025: The Curtain Falls on a Record-Breaking Ninth Edition

With Piazza Aldo Moro packed and buzzing with excitement, the curtain falls on the ninth edition of the Picentia Short Film Festival—four intense days dedicated to short films, music, and events that have transformed Battipaglia into a cultural hub of international significance. This edition featured 30 finalist short films in competition, selected from thousands of entries submitted from all over the world, with the participation of directors from 68 countries: a strong sign of the festival’s global reach, which has successfully opened itself to the world while maintaining a strong connection to the local community. The response from the local community was extraordinary: the public participated with enthusiasm and consistency, making the city a protagonist not only as a stage but as a truly welcoming and creative community, capable of supporting and promoting young talent and international guests. The closing night offered unforgettable moments right from the start, enhanced by a musical performance by Maestro Daniele Gibboni, who presented a refined interpretation of the “Canto degli Italiani.” Joining him on stage was the Choir of the “T. Confalonieri” Music High School in Campagna, conducted by Maestro Tiziana Caputo, with the participation of tenor Lorenzo Di Lucia and pianist Antonio Di Marco. It was a solemn and captivating introduction that successfully blended art, patriotism, and beauty, symbolically kicking off an evening of collective celebration. Further turning the spotlight on the event was actor Sergio Assisi, who was honored with the Picentia Award – City of Battipaglia: a recognition of his artistic career and his ability to portray Italy with a profound, ironic, and human perspective. Alongside him was RAI Communications Director Fabrizio Casinelli, who received the Lifetime Achievement Award for Communication for his unwavering commitment to promoting truth, the rule of law, and cultural information. An important announcement regarding the future was also made from the festival stage: the Picentia Short Film Festival will form a partnership with the Municipality of Vietri sul Mare, which will host a preview of the festival starting with the next edition. Sealing this new cultural partnership between the two regions was Daniele Benincasa, the councilor for culture, performing arts, and ceramics for the Municipality of Vietri, who honored Sergio Assisi with the quintessential symbol of Vietri’s tradition: the ceramic donkey, an icon of a distinctive and timeless art form. This success is also reflected in the numbers: nearly 100,000 viewers tuned in simultaneously online for the final evening, in addition to the thousands of people who filled the square and festival venues throughout the event. “Dreaming today is more important than ever,” says Artistic Director Luca Capacchione, “because cinema offers us an escape but also a lens through which to interpret reality. A grand finale with a bang for the Picentia Short Film Festival, which tomorrow, Sunday, September 28, closes its ninth edition with a day packed with events focusing on the rule of law, cinema, remembrance, culture, and entertainment. The festival, now one of the most anticipated events in Southern Italy for the world of short films, wraps up with a program that involves the entire city, stretching from the institutional heart of Palazzo di Città to Piazza Aldo Moro, transformed for the occasion into an open-air cinema and a gathering place for the public. Taking center stage on the final evening will be the beloved actor and director Sergio Assisi, who will receive the prestigious Picentia Award – City of Battipaglia: an honor recognizing his versatile talent and his ability to portray Italy on both the big and small screens with irony and depth. Joining him on stage will be journalist and writer Fabrizio Casinelli, RAI’s director of communications, who will receive the Picentia Award for Communication in recognition of his commitment to truth and the rule of law. The day will begin at 10:00 a.m. in Piazza Aldo Moro with an event dedicated to automobiles and safety: an exhibition of classic cars, accompanied by a safe driving course organized by the Automobile Club Salerno. An opportunity to immerse oneself in the charm of the cars that have made history, while reflecting on the importance of road safety. At 10:30 a.m., in the Municipal Hall, the focus will shift to civic engagement with the conference “Day of Legality in Memory of Boris Giuliano,” dedicated to one of the iconic figures in the fight against the Mafia. The conference will open with a performance by the “T. Confalonieri” Music High School in Campagna, conducted by Maestro Luciano Marchetta, with a performance of the Italian National Anthem, sung by tenor Francesco Napoletano, accompanied by Antonio Di Marco on piano and Costabile Caruccio on electric bass. This will be followed by remarks from Dr. Beniamino Fazio, Deputy Police Commissioner and Director of the DIA in Catanzaro; the Honorable Chiara Colosimo, Public Prosecutor of Catanzaro; and Wanda Ferro, Undersecretary at the Ministry of the Interior, who will participate via a video message. In the afternoon, at 6:00 p.m. in the Conference Room, there will be a meeting with the press and the public to take stock of this extraordinary edition of the festival. The morning will begin at the Salotto Comunale with Picentia for Schools: “Generations Taking Flight: Schools and Businesses Toward the Future of the Region,” a panel featuring the Salerno Chamber of Commerce, ENAV, and the FlySalerno Association. This is an opportunity for dialogue between the educational sector and institutional and economic entities, to reflect on growth prospects and opportunities linked to the region and its international focus. The afternoon, meanwhile, will be dedicated to literature and cinematic storytelling with Picentia Books: at 6:00 p.m., in the Conference Room, “A Survival Guide to Cinema” will be presented—an initiative organized by Nano Film designed for those who want to navigate the world of cinema with practical tools and advice from industry professionals. At 7:00 p.m., the competition takes center stage with the screening of the short films nominated for the Picentia Award – Best Film: *Taste of India* by Fabio Garofalo and Jacopo Santambrogio, *Miss Postura* by Luca Turco, *Il tempo di un ricordo* by Carlo De Benedictis, *Mentre il verde cresceva* by Giacomo Della Rocca, *Enfold Me* by Hongyu Jiang, and *Dream Car Wash* by Edoardo Brighenti. For the Docs&Discovery section, the festival will screen *Dinosaur Man* by Kazuya Ashizawa (Japan) and *The Keeper of the Lake* by Simone Bressello (Italy). The morning will be dedicated to schools with the “Picentia for Schools: ‘Green Day’” event. The program features screenings of three short films focused on the environment: *59 degrees* (France), *Energia, cultura e conoscenza* (Italy), and *Goodbye pig* (Italy/Spain). This will be followed by the School Workshop on Climate Change with Terna, which will present its approach to environmental sustainability and the planning of the National Transmission Grid. Geologist Antonietta Agrillo and engineer Alessandra Maria Fiorella will speak, leading a discussion with students and teachers on energy, innovation, and the future. The afternoon and evening will be dedicated to the short films in competition: in the Southern Frames section, the following will be screened: *Dagon* by Paolo Gaudio, *Una faccia da cinema* by Alberto Salvucci, *Omomori* by Regina Del Gaudio, *Tilt* by Antonio Palumbo, and *You’ve been well, Alfio* by Giovanni Cavarra Borgh. And this one is done too! I needed a few hours to realize what we accomplished. The fifth edition has reached its conclusion, carrying emotions, ideas, hopes, and indelible memories. A team of over forty people completed this festival with willpower, tenacity, skill and professionalism. These people believed in a project that I define as beautiful and dignified. We are not a big event, we don't have big budgets, but we are enormous in spirit. This year I carefully watched people's eyes and finally understood how capable we were of moving people, of entering the hearts of those who were with us. We were truly POP, close to people, capable of genuinely expressing the values of art and cinema. I strongly believe in the path we are tracing together. Thank you all, Luca.

PSFF and Vitruvio Entertainment Join Forces for the Fifth Edition

Vitruvio Entertainment and the Picentia Short Film Festival have formalized their partnership on the occasion of the event’s fifth edition. This partnership reflects both organizations’ commitment to continuing on a path of steady growth through a synergy that looks toward the future. Vitruvio Entertainment, a very young creative studio and film production company, has already distinguished itself in its first few months of operation through high-quality work and initiatives that have engaged the local community. The Picentia Short Film Festival is one of the leading international short film festivals in Campania and the province of Salerno, organized by the Independent Film Production Association ACT Production, a young production company composed of local filmmakers aged 20 to 29, whose works have been officially selected for and/or won awards at several prestigious international short film festivals over the past four years. The festival was founded and took place in the small town of Montecorvino Rovella, in the heart of the Monti Picentini Regional Park, in the province of Salerno (2017–2019), before moving to Naples and Battipaglia (2020). The fifth edition—with a “pop art” theme—will take place in the city of Battipaglia in September 2021. The PSFF consists of seven competition categories (Horror & Thriller, Drama & Social, Comedy & Comic, Past & Future, Docs & Discovery, Green & Nature, Music Videos), whose finalists will be judged both by a specialized technical jury and by the audience present at the screening. Other special awards are presented by the press jury and Vitruvio Entertainment’s partners, respectively.

PSFF: fifth edition call for entries open - the festival goes POP

The fifth edition of the Picentia Short Film Festival, an international short film event, starts from the selection phase. From November 15, 2020 to July 12, filmmakers from around the world can register through FilmFreeway. Seven competition sections are confirmed: Drama&Social, Comedy&Comic, Horror&Thriller, Past&Future, Green&Nature, Docs&Discovery and Music Video. Three juries will determine the awards. The theme for this year is "LET'S POP" – being more popular, close and attentive to the community. At the fourth edition, 259 short films from 41 different countries participated, with approximately three and a half million viewers per day between TV and web.

Sophie Chiarello at PSFF2020: "I go home with faith in the future"

Sophie Chiarello, director and screenwriter, was a guest on the last day of the Picentia Short Film Festival to present the unreleased short film "Un filo intorno al mondo" starring Aldo, Giovanni and Giacomo, the famous comedy trio. With Chiarello, the discussion covered both the technical management of the short and her long career alongside the trio. "Working with Aldo, Giovanni and Giacomo has always been fantastic. I had the opportunity for a long time to be their assistant director, and directing them was a fantastic emotion". On the festival: "I love seeing young people working and loving this sector. Seeing the Picentia Short Film Festival I go home with an ever-growing faith in the future, because I know there is someone who still cares about cinema".

Ernesto Mahieux at PSFF2020: "Young people come first"

Ernesto Mahieux, born in 1946, actor, director and screenwriter, was awarded the Picentia Lifetime Achievement Award 2020 during the fourth edition of the Picentia Short Film Festival. The actor, best known for his role in "The Embalmer" which earned him the David di Donatello for Best Supporting Actor, spoke about culture and youth in his brief but meaningful speech. " You are crazy and God helps the crazy ones ". This is the phrase with which he opened his speech, addressing the organizers. " You are crazy because, despite everything, despite the difficulties, you love your work and keep doing it. There is nothing better than healthy youth – said Mahieux at the press conference – For me, young people come first, for me young people are the future. The older generations owe you a debt, myself included. That is why I am with you. Yours is a pure, beautiful initiative and when there is culture, it must be nurtured. A country without culture is dead and we cannot allow it. There are those who want to suppress culture and freedom. We fought for culture, so long live freedom and long live the young! ".
