Every edition of the Picentia Short Film Festival begins with a question. Not a theme to be declared, but a direction to take—a lens through which to observe the present and interrogate the language of cinema. At the decisive milestone of our tenth edition, Echoes is the answer we have chosen to give for 2026.

The echo traverses the history of art and human thought as an engine of propagation and persistence. It is not mere repetition, but transformation: it is a sound, an image, an urgent impulse that departs from a point of origin, travels across space, meets matter, and returns to us altered, enriched, and alive. Cinema is, by its very nature, an echo chamber. It is the art form that seizes the ephemeral only to return it as indelible memory; it is the gaze that projects from the past into tomorrow, turning the singular voice of an author into a collective reverberation in which anyone can see themselves reflected.

Choosing Echoes to commemorate a ten-year journey means reckoning with the depth of our history without yielding to the temptation of nostalgia. It means listening to the resonance of who we once were—the shared visions, the hurdles overcome, the generations of filmmakers who entrusted their earliest stories to us—in order to measure the true impact of that wave upon the present. In an era overwhelmed by white noise, sudden oblivion, and instant consumption, contemplating the echo means asking what remains, what endures, and what continues to vibrate within the viewer’s consciousness once the darkness of the screening hall fades away.

Within this landscape, independent cinema reaffirms its irreplaceable calling. It is precisely through non-aligned cinematic language and short formats that the echo rings most genuine and necessary: as civic resonance, political testimony, an open wound, or a poetic leap. Here, emerging voices do not merely seek to be heard; they deliver shockwaves capable of upsetting conventions, interrogating reality, and reshaping the foundational grammar of audiovisual storytelling.

For a decade, the Picentia Short Film Festival has inhabited this space with purpose and grit. Not simply as a screening showcase, but as a permanent cultural apparatus forging vital links among cinema, regional heritage, education, and international horizons. Echoes forms the invisible fabric running through every strand of this tenth edition’s program: an ongoing exchange where dialogue between established masters and rising visionaries, between preservation and experimentation, between sight and sound, vibrates at a shared frequency.

We embraced this theme because we believe culture must never settle for the fleeting moment; it must aspire to leave a lasting imprint. It is the works capable of echoing that ignite genuine transformation, unraveling the complexities of our present day and tracing the path toward a more conscious and sustainable audiovisual ecosystem. Backing the artistic evolution of rising creators and establishing authentic arenas for creative dialogue remain our cornerstone—the visible proof of a responsibility that has deepened and matured over time.

Battipaglia and our surrounding region do not serve as a passive backdrop, but as the living surface upon which these reverberations collide, multiply, and thrive. Cultivating an authoritative, internationally recognized destination for short filmmaking right here across ten consecutive editions means transforming a bold cultural gamble into a solid, enduring stronghold of identity.

Echoes, therefore, is not a backward glance, but an act of momentum and conviction. It is the affirmation of an impact that endures, of a voice that refuses to fade, continually generating purpose and shaping what lies ahead. It is within this relentless reverberation that cinema rediscovers its essential necessity.

And it is within this shared echo that the Picentia Short Film Festival proudly inaugurates its second decade.
